A Two-Night Dark Skies Escape: Storytelling Skies, Coastal Calm & Boutique Comfort at East Beach Guest House

There are places you visit…
and places you feel.

The South Downs National Park at night is one of those rare landscapes that stays with you long after you’ve left. One of the International Dark Sky Reserves, the dark sky at Bignor Hill is  vast, velvety, limitless. A place where the sky becomes a storybook, the air thickens with quiet, and the horizon feels almost ancient in its stillness.

If you’re seeking more than just a room, more than just a weekend away, if you’re searching for an experience try our Two-Night Dark Skies Escape blends stargazing with the wonder of the South Downs with the calm of the West Sussex coast, creating a getaway that feels intimate, meaningful and beautifully curated.

Nestled right beside the shoreline, East Beach Guest House in Littlehampton is your warm, boutique base in West Sussex: a place to restore by the sea before journeying into the magic of the International Dark Sky Reserve at night.

This is not simply a stay.

It’s a story,

one you step into the moment the sun goes down.

Meet the Guests Who Will Fall in Love with This Escape.

This experience has been created with specific travellers in mind, people who value meaning, atmosphere and connection.

1. The Coastal Explorer

You rise early, pull on your boots, and head straight for the water. You crave big skies, fresh air and the simplicity of a long walk beside the sea. At night, the Downs offer you a different version of vastness. Stars instead of waves.

2. The Slow-Life Seeker

You’re tired of rushing. You want stillness, warmth, grounding. The gentle pace of a night walk, the comfort of returning to a boutique room, and the soft quiet of the beach at dawn. It all speaks to you.

3. The Story-Lover

You adore places with history, folklore and hidden tales. Bignor Hill, with its legends, Roman roads and chalkland mysteries. It feels like stepping into a storybook written across the landscape.

4. The Foodie Wanderer

For you, travel is flavour. You come alive in cosy pubs, artisan cafés, warm fires, hearty meals and thoughtful touches. Like our continental style house breakfast tray, try one of our Sussex wines from local vineyards or a late-night glass of port.

5. The Stargazer (Secret or Serious)

You’re curious about the night sky. You want to understand the stars, spot constellations, learn stories written above our heads for thousands of years. The Dark Skies team brings the galaxy alive for you.

6. The Boutique-Stay Traveller

You value handcrafted interiors, personal hospitality, peaceful rooms, warm lighting, thoughtful details and host connection. You choose experiences. Not just hotels.

If any of these feel like you, this escape was built with you in mind.

Why Choose a Dark Skies Experience?

(And why it’s so much more than a weekend away.)

The world feels loud. Busy. Bright.

A Dark Skies adventure invites you into the opposite: stillness, silence, simplicity. It’s an experience where:

  • You disconnect from the world, and reconnect with yourself

  • The sky becomes the entertainment, not a screen

  • You slow your pace, rather than filling an itinerary

  • You feel small in the best possible way

And choosing a Dark Skies experience in West Sussex means blending two landscapes:

  • the quiet majesty of the South Downs, and

  • the calming rhythm of the Sussex coast

It’s the perfect antidote to frantic modern living. A mindful, immersive getaway where you’re not just staying somewhere… you’re experiencing something.

Bignor Hill: Where History, Myth & Sky Meet.

Your guided walk takes you to Bignor Hill,  one of the most atmospheric and untouched corners of the South Downs National Park. Known for its:

  • Official Dark Sky Discovery Site

  • 360° horizons with almost no light pollution

  • Roman roads crossing ancient chalkland

  • Neolithic earthworks hidden under the grass

  • Folklore of a Celtic dragon said to sleep beneath the hilltop

By day, Bignor is beautiful.

By night, it becomes transcendent.

The land falls away in every direction, and the star-strewn sky feels close enough to touch. Constellations become crisp. Planets glow. The Milky Way arcs like a river of silver.

It’s the kind of place that reminds you how old the world is…
and how incredible it feels to simply stop and look up.

A guided dark skies walk

Calm, Atmospheric, Intimate.

Led by the extraordinary guides from Pied à Terre Adventures, your night walk blends quiet exploration with deep knowledge and gentle storytelling.

Over 2–2.5 hours you will:

  • Learn to identify constellations and planets

  • Hear tales of folklore, geology and night-time wildlife

  • Walk routes chosen for their stillness and clarity

  • Use red-light torches to preserve night vision

  • Experience true darkness—a rare gift in the UK

  • Pause for big-sky moments from hilltop vantage points

This is not a fast hike or a high-energy challenge.

It’s a mindful, sensory experience, one that encourages you to slow your breathing, tune into the night, and feel the landscape in a new way.

It’s calm. It’s atmospheric.
It’s quietly unforgettable.
